The rainy season brings in a host of issues in many homes. Some have to deal with floods, others a leaky roof or wall waterproofing. Then there’s also the mold that is very hard to get rid of. With our humidity levels going over 90%, many homes really have to struggle with varying levels of mustiness.
If your home falls victim to amag, you’ll need to take certain precautions. You don’t want mildew to get into your mattress as that might cause health problems and keep you from getting proper sleep.
Unfortunately, your bed is one of the best places for mold and mildew growth. It can get damp and warm from your body heat and fluids. The humidity also makes things worse.
So how do you prevent mold from getting into your mattress? Here are some of our tips:
Use a breathable mattress cover.
This will help add a layer of protection to your mattress but will also ensure that it breathes and dries out. You can either buy an actual mattress protector or use a fitted sheet made with a breathable material then layer it with a top sheet for best results.
Air out your mattress every once in a while.
Airing out your mattress when it’s sunny out will also help dry out your mattress. If taking your mattress outside is too labor-intensive, you can also just leave it uncovered for a few hours with all of the windows inside your bedroom opened.
Use a dehumidifier in your bedroom.
To help control the humidity levels in your bedroom, get a few dehumidifier jars from the hardware and place a few near your mattress. Add one by your side table or under your bed to help control the humidity levels around your mattress. Using your air conditioner can also help.
Do not place damp towels or clothes on top of your mattress.
It’s extra hard to dry out mattresses during this time of year so don’t add more reasons for it to get wet.
Don’t lie on the bed without drying yourself completely after a shower.
Avoid doing this and you’ll prevent one way for your mattress to get wet.
Flip or rotate your mattress.
The rainy season is one of the best times of the year to flip or rotate your mattress, so give it a go.
Remedy accidents immediately.
Spills, bedwetting, and other accidents that can get your bed wet can also put your mattress at risk of mold and mildew. So make sure to dry them out right away. Try to take out as much of the fluid as possible by patting the area dry with a highly absorbent material like chamois or a microfiber towel. You can also sprinkle it with baking soda then let it rest for a few hours before vacuuming to ensure that it will dry up right away.
With some TLC, you can definitely keep your mattress safe from a mold infestation. Keep these tips in mind and you can be sure to keep your mattress and bedroom healthy.
